What does drafting mean and is it allowed?
Drafting involves situating yourself directly behind or directly beside another competitor in an effort to reduce wind or water resistence. Drafting is legal for the swim and run portions of a triathlon, but illegal during the biking portion. Cyclists must stay ouside of the drafting zone at all times, except when passing another cyclist. The drafting zone is 7m long. A passing cyclist has 15 seconds to get out of the drafting zone. Therefore, please remain at least 7m behind another cyclist at all times unless when quickly passing. Drafting will be strictly monitored during the cycling portion. If you are caught drafting by an official, you will be asked to stop and dismount both feet from your bike and serve a one minute penalty. If you are caught drafting a second time, you will be disqualified.

When completing the bicycle portion, the helmet must reamin on the head with the chinstrap securely fastened until the bike is properly mounted back on the transition rack. Helmet infractions with be stricly monitored and will result in automatic disqualification if the rules are not adhered to. Athletes warming up prior to the event without wearing helmets may be prevented from starting the race. Under no circumstances will hockey helmets, rollerblade helmets, or anything other than a proper bicycle helmet be allowed for use.

Is there a water station on the run?
There will be a water station at the 800m and 2k sections of the run. Volunteers will hand you water in a cup.
How shallow is the water?
The average depth is approximately 4 to 5 feet deep. Participants will likely be able to touch the bottom at all sections of the course. We make every effort to make the swim course as safe and beginner-friendly as possible. Water levels could change drastically prior to the event, but have been quite shallow for all prior Loaring Triathlons. In fact, many competitors have chosen to walk the entire swim portion of the event. However, we strongly advise being able to swim the full course without being able to touch the bottom. In the event that Lake Erie decides to be very wavy on race morning, a decison will be made to shorten the swim, or possibly cancel the swim portion and replace it with a run portion.

There will not be a relay division at the 2008 Loaring Triathlon. A relay division may be implemented for future Loaring Triathlons, but it is yet to be determined.
